Mah Jongg for Beginners
Dolores Parrish
Beginner Guide

Starting mah jongg is simpler than it looks. You need four things: a tile set, the current National Mah Jongg League card, racks, and a mat. That is the whole list. Everything else can wait until you have played a few games and know what you like.

This guide walks through each piece, what it costs, and how to choose your first set without overspending. By the end you will know exactly what to buy and what to skip for now.

What Do You Need to Start Playing Mah Jongg?

New to mah jongg? Here is the gear beginners actually need: tiles, the 2026 league card, racks, and a mat, plus what to skip for now.

The Basics

What American mah jongg actually is

American mah jongg is a tile game played by four people around a square table. Each player builds a hand from 13 tiles, drawing and discarding in turn, trying to match one of the hand combinations printed on the yearly National Mah Jongg League card. When your tiles match a combination, you call "mah jongg" and the hand ends.

Every game opens with the Charleston, the structured tile-passing sequence (right, across, left) that gives the brand behind this guide its name. Learn more about us on the About page. The Charleston is also why the game rewards a second look at your tiles before play begins: you get three passes to shape your hand.

Your First Kit

The four things beginners need

1. Tiles: a 30MM set

For traditional manual play, you want 30MM tiles, the standard size for rack-based American mah jongg. The Charleston Club's 30MM tile-only sets include 166 tiles and run from $125 to $375 depending on the design. Budget-friendly picks include Gold Shimmer at $125, mid-range designs like Jade at $175, and most designs at $285.

If you would rather buy everything at once, the Complete American Mahjong Set ($100) is the simplest first purchase: tiles plus racks in one box, so you can sit down and play.

2. The 2026 league card

You cannot play American mah jongg without the current year's card. The 2026 National Mah Jongg League Card comes in Standard ($18, 5 1/8" x 4") and Large ($20, 6 1/8" x 4"). The hand combinations are identical on both. Beginners usually do better with Large: the bigger print is easier to scan while you are still learning where everything sits on the card.

3. Racks

Racks hold your tiles upright and include a pusher for moving the wall. The Wooden Mah Jongg Racks with Pushers, 19 inch (Set of 4) ($75) give you a full table's worth in one purchase. They are the classic choice and they last.

4. A mat

A neoprene mat gives tiles a quiet surface and protects the table. The Mah Jongg Table Mat, 32x32 Neoprene ($50) is sized for a standard card table. If you host, you will use it every game.

Choosing Tiles

How to pick your first tile set

With 16 designs ranging from $125 to $375, the choice comes down to taste and budget, not quality of play. A few practical notes:

  • All 30MM sets play the same. The price differences reflect the design and finish, not how the tiles work in a game.
  • Lighter designs are easier to read. If your eyes tire, high-contrast faces help more than any accessory.
  • Start simple, upgrade later. A $125 set like Gold Shimmer plays exactly the same hands as a $375 Mother of Pearl set. Buy the look you love when you know you are hooked.

One more honest note: the 36MM Designer Series tiles ($275 to $325) are made for automatic mahjong tables, not manual rack play. A 36MM label alone does not guarantee they fit a specific automatic table, so confirm the tile requirements against your table model before buying. As a beginner playing with racks, 30MM is the right size.

Learn the Card

Learn the card before game night

The card looks intimidating the first time. It is not. Our guide on how to read the 2026 NMJL card walks through each section so you can sit down at your first game able to find your hand. Spend twenty minutes with the card and a set of tiles before you play with others, and the first game will feel far less overwhelming.

Skip for Now

What beginners should skip for now

  • 36MM tiles. They are for automatic tables. Confirm your table model needs them before spending $275 or more.
  • A second tile set. One set is plenty until you are playing weekly.
  • Fancy storage. The 3-piece canvas bag sets ($85) are lovely, but a new player should spend that money on the card and a mat first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beginner Questions

How long does it take a beginner to learn mah jongg?

Most new players can follow a game after one taught session and play independently within three or four games. The card does the heavy lifting: you are matching your tiles to printed combinations, not memorizing rules from scratch.

Do I need my own set to join a group?

Not at first. Many groups have spare sets, and teachers often bring extras. Buy your own set once you are playing regularly, starting with the 2026 league card ($18 to $20), which you will need regardless.

What is the difference between Standard and Large league cards?

Size and price only. Standard is 5 1/8" x 4" ($18); Large is 6 1/8" x 4" ($20). Both print the same hand combinations. Beginners usually prefer Large for readability.

How many tiles come in a 30MM set?

The Charleston Club's 30MM tile-only sets include 166 American mah jongg tiles.

Can I learn mah jongg online before buying anything?

Yes, and it is a good idea. Watch a few teaching games, then spend time with the card guide linked above. When you buy, start with the card, then tiles, racks, and a mat in that order.

Is the Complete American Mahjong Set enough to start?

Yes. At $100 it includes tiles and racks, so paired with the 2026 league card and a mat you have a full playable setup for one table.

Should a beginner buy 36MM tiles?

Only if you own an automatic mahjong table and have confirmed the tiles fit that specific model. A 36MM label alone does not guarantee compatibility. Beginners playing manual rack games should buy 30MM.
