What does a beginner need to play American Mah Jongg?
For a standard four-player manual game, plan on an American Mah Jongg tile set, four racks, dice and the current NMJL card. A complete set can combine several of those pieces. Mats, upgraded racks and extra storage are optional.
Does the complete American Mahjong Set include the current NMJL card?
No. The complete set includes 166 tiles, four racks, dice, wind indicator, betting chips, instruction booklet and carrying bag. Purchase the current NMJL card separately if your group plays current NMJL hands.
Do beginners need a Mah Jongg mat?
No. A mat is optional. It can help protect the table, reduce tile noise and create a defined playing surface. The Charleston Rules Mat also puts passing reminders directly on the table.
Should I buy wooden racks immediately?
Not if your complete set already includes racks. Play several games first. Wooden or acrylic rack sets make more sense when you know the length, pusher style and table feel you prefer.
Do I need a new tile set every year?
No. The NMJL card changes annually, not the basic American Mah Jongg tile set. Keep your tiles and replace the card when you want to play the new year's NMJL hands.
Can I give a starter setup as a gift?
Yes. A complete manual-play set plus the current NMJL card gives a beginner a clear starting point. Add a mat or upgraded racks only when you know what the recipient would actually use.
Are 30MM and 36MM tile sets the same thing?
No. The Charleston Club's 30MM collection is aimed at regular rack-based manual play. The 36MM Designer Series uses larger tiles commonly purchased for compatible automatic tables, though 36MM tiles can also be handled manually when your racks and storage fit them.
