Mah Jongg Tile Care Guide: Cleaning, Storage & Maintenance Tips

A high-quality Mah Jongg set is an heirloom in the making. Whether you have a modern acrylic set or a classic melamine collection from The Charleston Club, proper care is essential to keep the engraving crisp, the paint vibrant, and the "clack" satisfying for years to come.

1. Routine Cleaning (The "Quick Wipe")

The oils from our hands, along with snacks at the table, can eventually make tiles feel sticky or look dull. We recommend a quick wipe-down every 3-5 game sessions.

  • The Tool: Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth.
  • The Solution: A slightly damp cloth (water only) is usually enough.
  • The Method: Lay the tiles face up and gently wipe across the surface. Let them air dry completely before putting them back in the case to prevent moisture buildup.

2. Deep Cleaning (The "Spa Day")

Once a year, or if you purchase a vintage set that needs refreshing, you may need a deeper clean. Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Prepare the Bath: Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap. (Note: Avoid hot water, which can damage acrylic).
  2. The Dip: Dip a soft cloth into the soapy water and wring it out until it is just damp. Do not soak/submerge your tiles in water, as this can loosen the paint or cause layers to delaminate.
  3. Scrub Gently: Wipe each tile individually. If there is grime in the engraved grooves, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently loosen it.
  4. Dry Immediately: Use a dry towel to remove moisture right away. Never leave tiles wet.

3. The "Never Do" List

To avoid permanent damage to your set, please avoid the following:

  • NO Dishwashers: The high heat and harsh detergents will ruin the finish and paint.
  • NO Harsh Chemicals: Avoid acetone, bleach, or strong ammonia cleaners. These can eat away at the plastic and strip the painted symbols.
  • NO Prolonged Sun: Do not leave tiles outside or in direct sunlight for long periods, as UV rays can cause white tiles to yellow and colors to fade.

4. Proper Storage

How you store your game is just as important as how you play it.

  • Climate Control: Keep your set in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing it in a hot car or a damp attic. Extreme heat can cause tiles to warp.
  • Use the Trays: Always place tiles back in their lined trays or wraps. Tossing them loose into a bag can cause scratching and chipping over time.

5. Removing Price Stickers

If you have a new set (or a vintage find) with a stubborn price sticker on a tile, do not scrape it with a metal object!

The Fix: Use a hair dryer on a low heat setting for 10-15 seconds to warm the adhesive. The sticker should peel off easily. If residue remains, a tiny dab of olive oil rubbed with a soft cloth will usually lift it without damaging the plastic.
