Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you are new to The Charleston Club or new to the game of Mah Jongg entirely, we are here to help. Below you will find answers to the most common questions about the game, the sets, and how to play.
General Mah Jongg Questions
What is the difference between American and Chinese Mah Jongg?
While both versions share the same roots and similar tiles, there are three primary differences that define American Mah Jongg:
- Jokers: American sets include 8 Joker tiles, which are used as wild cards to complete combinations. Chinese sets do not use Jokers.
- The Charleston: Before the game begins, American players participate in a mandatory passing phase called "The Charleston," where tiles are exchanged with other players to improve their hand.
- The Card: American Mah Jongg follows official hands published annually by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL). You must have the current year's card to play.
Is Mah Jongg difficult to learn?
Mah Jongg has a learning curve, but it is very accessible. Most beginners can pick up the basic mechanics (drawing and discarding) in a single session. Mastering the strategy, defensive play, and memorizing the card takes time, which is exactly what makes the game so addictive and rewarding. Check out our How to Play guide to get started.
How many people do I need to play?
The standard game requires 4 players. However, there are modified rules available for playing with 3 people (often by omitting the Charleston or stripping the wall differently). It is generally not played with 2 people.
How long does a typical game take?
A single game typically takes 20-45 minutes, depending on player experience and pace. Most Mah Jongg sessions involve multiple games, often lasting 2-3 hours of social play.
Do I need an NMJL card to play?
Yes, the official NMJL card is essential for American Mah Jongg. The card lists all valid winning hands and is updated annually. Cards can be purchased through the National Mah Jongg League website or at many retailers.
What does "The Charleston" mean?
The Charleston is the tile-passing ritual at the start of each American Mah Jongg game. Players exchange unwanted tiles with opponents in a specific pattern (right, across, left) to improve their hands. Learn more in our glossary of terms.
About Our Sets & Tiles
What is included in a standard American Mah Jongg set?
A complete American Mah Jongg set from The Charleston Club contains 152 tiles used in play, plus extras. This typically breaks down as:
- 36 Bams (Bamboos) - numbered 1-9, four of each
- 36 Craks (Characters) - numbered 1-9, four of each
- 36 Dots (Circles) - numbered 1-9, four of each
- 12 Dragons (Red, Green, White/Soap) - four of each
- 16 Winds (North, East, West, South) - four of each
- 8 Flowers - numbered 1-8
- 8 Jokers
- Blank Spares (usually 2-4 depending on the set)
Note: Complete sets also include 4 racks, pushers, dice, wind indicators, and a storage case.
What makes your Mah Jongg sets different from others?
Our sets feature premium 36MM automatic tiles with designer finishes, precision engineering, and superior craftsmanship. Unlike mass-market sets, we focus on optimal weight distribution, deeply engraved characters, and artistic finishes that transform tiles into collectible pieces. Each set is curated for performance and aesthetics.
What does "36MM automatic" mean?
36MM refers to the tile size—these are standard tournament-size tiles preferred by serious players. "Automatic" indicates these tiles are designed for smooth, effortless shuffling with the satisfying sound and feel that Mah Jongg enthusiasts love. The size and weight create optimal gameplay dynamics.
What are the tiles made of?
Most modern high-quality sets are made from Melamine or heavy Acrylic. These materials are durable, scratch-resistant, and provide that satisfying "clack" sound when shuffling. We do not use bone or ivory.
Why do some sets have numbers on the tiles?
American sets almost always include standard Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) and letters (N, E, W, S) in the corners of the tiles. This makes the game much easier to learn for players who do not read Chinese characters.
Are your sets suitable for beginners?
Yes! While our sets are premium quality, they're perfect for players at any level. Quality tiles actually make learning easier—they're more comfortable to handle, shuffle smoothly, and the clear engraving helps new players identify tiles quickly. We recommend pairing your set with our beginner's guide.
Do you sell individual tiles or replacement pieces?
Please contact us regarding replacement tiles or individual components. We can often accommodate requests for specific tiles or accessories to match your existing set.
What are "designer finishes"?
Our designer finishes are exclusive colorways and artistic treatments applied to tiles. These range from classic solid colors to contemporary patterns and premium metallic accents. Each finish is carefully selected to create a cohesive, visually stunning set that performs beautifully during play.
Care & Maintenance
How do I clean my tiles?
We recommend a simple wipe-down with a soft microfiber cloth and warm water. For a deeper clean, you can use a drop of mild dish soap. Never use harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive scrubbers, and never put your tiles in the dishwasher. For more details, please visit our Tile Care Guide.
How should I store my set?
Store tiles in the provided case in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid humid environments that could affect tile materials. Proper storage preserves finish quality and ensures decades of use.
Will the engraving fade over time?
Our tiles feature deeply engraved characters designed to withstand years of regular play. With proper care, the engraving will remain crisp and clear indefinitely. Avoid abrasive cleaning methods that could affect engraving depth.
Can tiles be refinished or restored?
While our tiles are built to last, contact us if you have concerns about tile condition or appearance. We can provide guidance on restoration options or replacement possibilities.
